PCB and DDT in laminated sediments from offshore and archipelago areas of the NW Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

Research is presented on tracking the accumulation and transportation rates of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in the northwestern region of the Baltic Sea. The pronounced sediment burial of polychlorinated biphenyls and the pesticide DDT in the Baltic's archipelago can be attributed to climate-related resuspension and erosion dynamics.

Sediment burial of PCBs in the offshore Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

A comparison is presented on levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Baltic Sea, using samples obtained from sediments and pelagic biota. While levels in biota showed a decline, sediment cores displayed constant or increasing PCB concentrations due to the efficient trapping effects of laminated proper sediments in the Baltic.
