Condition-dependent virulence in a horizontally and vertically transmitted bacterial parasite

Article Abstract:

The variation in virulence, parasite load and fidelity of vertical transmission is measured by using the freshwater ciliate Paramecium caudatum and its endonuclear bacterial parasite Holospora undulata for different stages of infection, different host clones, and two food conditions. The results suggest that virulence is not a constant property of the parasite, and that a single relationship between virulence and transmission does not exist.

Rapidly changing life history during invasion

Article Abstract:

The demography of the fresh water fish species vendace during its development over a decade, from first occurrence to an established population, in the Pasvik watercourse is documented. The invasive ability of vendace appears to result from a combination of high fecundity and strong competitive ability in a disturbed environment.
