Aquatic problems caused by human activities in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the causes of and solutions for aquatic fauna management problems in Alberta, Canada's Banff National Park. Causes of the problems include road salting, nutrient loading, airborne organic contaminants and early lake stocking programs with nonnative fishes; restoration efforts for two alpine lakes are also discussed.

Melting glaciers: a major source of persistent organochlorines to subalpine Bow Lake in Banff National Park, Canada

Article Abstract:

Research in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, shows that alpine glacier melts contribute between 50% to 97% of organochlorine inputs into Bow Lake. Tritium analyses of these melts indicates that a minimum of 10% of their content originates from ice deposited prior to 1970, when organochlorine contamination was higher. This finding suggests that global warming may increase organochlorine contamination to lakes, as glaciers continue to melt.

Cumulative effects of climate warming and other human activities on freshwaters of Arctic and Subarctic North America

Article Abstract:

The consequences of global warming and associated environmental changes for freshwater lakes and rivers of the north, which are threatened with warmer temperatures as well as by many human-caused environmental stressors such as organic pollutants, laying of gas and oil pipelines, mining for metals, laying of all-season roads are highlighted. The cumulative effects of these stresses would be far more serious than those caused by changing climate alone.
