Developing decision support systems for integrated coastal management in the tropics: is the ICM decision-making environment too complex for the development of a useable and useful DSS?

Article Abstract:

An evaluation is presented on three distinct coastal decision support systems, along with a description of components necessary to make the model successful yet responsive to a wide number of complex variables. These components include involvement of end users in developing the systems, constructing user-friendly interfaces, incorporating flexibility and updating capacities, and ensuring a visual display for results.

Roles of land use resolution and unit-area load rates in assessment of diffuse nutrient emissions

Article Abstract:

A simple unit-area load model-Catchment Management Support System is selected to estimate aggregated catchment emissions for the National Pollutant Inventory Program. It is shown that diffuse catchment emissions are influenced by the allocation of land uses and assignment of generation rates within a modeled catchment.

Temporal mangrove dynamics in relation to costal development in Pacific Panama

Article Abstract:

The changes in extent of fringing mangrove located in Punta Mala Bay, Panama in relation to costal development over a period of two decades are assessed. Punta Mala Bay is chosen due to its social importance and its biological significance, as it is one of few mangrove areas left around Panama City.
