Does functional redundancy exist?

Article Abstract:

The implications of the classical Lotka-Volterra competition models for the existence of functional redundancy in natural ecosystems are explored. It is concluded that in biodiversity experiments, functional redundancy is assumed to be an intuitive null hypothesis and the incompatibility of the functional redundancy with stable coexistence is shown by the theory of the Lotka-Volterra competition models.

Escaping the Bonferroni iron claw in ecological studies

Article Abstract:

Some criticisms made about the application of alpha-inflation correction procedures to repeated-test tables in ecological studies are analyzed. It is concluded that some reasonable control of alpha inflation is required as a safeguard against striking, but spurious findings that may strongly affect the credibility of ecological research.

The derivation of the power-law species-area relationship from a community-level fractal property is described. The importance of species-level fractals is discussed.
