Ecological economic problems and development patterns of the arid inland river basin in Northwest China

Article Abstract:

The Heihe River Basin (HRB) is the second largest inland river basin in arid Northwest China and in the middle reaches of the HRB, irrigation oases are distributed along the sides of the Heihe River that is a productive zone of economic development for the entire HRB. However, continuous increase in water utilization in the oases located in the middle reaches of the HRB resulted in lower discharge of river water, significantly drying up the tributaries and resulting in a marked degradation of the eco-environment of the entire basin.

Oasis land-use dynamics and its influence on the groundwater in arid Northwest China: a case from terminal oasis of Shiyang river basin

Article Abstract:

The terminal Oasis present in Shiyang river basin is analyzed to explain the impact of the changes in land-use on oases and the groundwater in arid Northwest China. The excessive use of the cropland area is found to lead to an increase in the extraction of groundwater, hence demonstrating the need of alternative strategies for proper allocation of the same.
