Environmental engineers, scientists, and policymakers: can we all just get along?

Article Abstract:

The respective roles played by environmental engineers and scientists is a raging controversy in the field of environmental engineering. The situation is aggravated by policymakers who decide whether monetary funds would be set aside for the field. Policymakers are essential even if scientists and engineers look down on them. In a certain sense they are also environmental leaders. Environmental engineering would be in a sorry state today if not for the funding provided by policymakers. They have also passed laws to control pollution.

Donald J. O'Connor (1922-1997): historic teacher and scholar of environmental engineering

Article Abstract:

The field of environmental engineering lost an exceptional teacher and scholar with the death of Donald J. O'Connor on Apr 18, 1997. His teaching career at Manhattan College, which spans more than 40 years, was marked by his clear exposition of data, combined with enthusiasm and excitement. Aside from the numerous awards he had received, he will best be remembered through the more-than-75 articles he had written on various environmental engineering subjects, particularly analyses on water quality.
