Environmental threats to buried archaeological remains

Article Abstract:

The results obtained at the Swedish National Heritage Board on the degradation of archaeological objects of bronze and iron and of bones from prehistoric graves, materials of which seem to be most affected by pollutants is presented. The deterioration rate of archaeological artifacts especially of inorganic materials has accelerated and this increased deterioration to a large part could be attributed to anthropogenic pollution.

Do pollutant-related forest declines threaten the sustainability of forests?

Article Abstract:

The critical loads approach to the assessment of forest sustainability has demonstrated the importance of conservation efforts. Both gaseous air pollution and litter have contributed to forest degradation. These factors can be mitigated in part by planting more tolerant tree species in heavily damaged areas and by removing litter from branches, foliage and topsoil.

Crown condition and soil acidification in Norwegian spruce forests

Article Abstract:

Increased pollution loadings have been found to affect soil magnesium and nitrogen levels in Norwegian spruce forests, which signal a rise in potentially damaging effects. Pollution reduces exchangeable magnesium levels and increases nitrogen contents, contributing to soil acidification. This in turn jeopardizes future soil stability, affecting forest growth.
