Experience influences diet mixing by herbivores: implications for plant biochemical diversity

Article Abstract:

The intrinsic value of a food or habitat is assumed as similar for individuals of a species and above a certain threshold density more profitable foods should always be preferred over less profitable foods. It is concluded that lack of experience learning to eat a variety of foods can diminish diet breadth and result in less uniform use of plants in a community.

The effects of plant population size on the interactions between the endangered plant Scorzonera humilis, a specialized herbivore, and a phytopathogenic fungus

Article Abstract:

The effects of population size on the interactions between Scorzonera humilis (Asteraceae), its specialized seed-feeding fly Heterostyloses macrurus and its specific systemic smut fungus Ustilago scorzonerae (Ustilaginales) is studied. Results suggest that plants may be released from parasites and pathogens through the fragmentation of the habitat.

Does macrophyte fractal complexity drive invertebrate diversity, biomass and body size distributions?

Article Abstract:

A rapid and straightforward approach to determine biological meaningful measures of structural complexity from mixed stands of vegetation is discussed. It was suggested that the approach taken is applicable to a wide range of situations where animals utilize a habitat mosaic in three dimensions.
