Greater groundnuts

Article Abstract:

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has successfully bred resistant varieties of peanuts that can thrive in the semi-arid climate of the tropics. Farmers in India have already begun planting the improved peanut varieties resulting in the boost of the country's edible oil economy. ICRISAT scientists are also trying to build peanut resistance to aflatoxin contamination through genetic engineering.

New technologies needed

Article Abstract:

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has created a Legumes On-Farming Testing and Nursery Unit to helpIndia increase its production of peanut, pigeonpea and chickpea. Farm tests were done to assess the effect of an improved set of farming practices and of improved plant varieties developed by ICRISAT. The tests showed favorable results if the new technologies were implemented properly.
