Future of environmental engineering

Article Abstract:

The importance of environmental engineering is such that it requires an umbrella organization to house its members as well as recognition in universities as an undergraduate course. Environmental engineers have their roots in civil engineering and as the demand for sanitary conditions prevailed, there was a greater need for engineers with the knowledge common of environmental engineers. An environmental engineering curriculum should provide both engineering and biological units. Presently, environmental engineers belong to a wide range of local and international societies.

Defining biosolids stability

Article Abstract:

There is no universal characteristic or a combination of characteristics that will properly define sludge suitability. There can only be specific criteria and standards that will define the compatibility of sludges and applications. For instance, sludge that is to be used as a fertilizer supplement should be judged as suitable using odor as a criterion. The pathogen content of sludge, on the other hand, is important if sludge is used to fertilize plants for human consumption.

Closure by P. Aarne Vesilind, member, ASCE

Article Abstract:

Environmental engineering should be recognized as a distinct and independent engineering field that deserves to form its own professional organization. In contrast to other engineering disciplines, environmental engineering does not only address the health, safety and welfare of the public, it also confronts the issue of maintaining the quality, health and welfare of other species, ecosystems and the whole environment.
