How simple grazing rules can lead to persistent boundaries in vegetation communities

Article Abstract:

Three differential equation models are presented for depicting the environmental impact of grazing habits on vegetation dynamics, including optimal foraging, random walk foraging, and taxis-diffusion. Taxis-diffusion corresponded to field observations. Use of the model in making animal husbandry and land management decisions is discussed.

The role of species richness for recruitment in a seminatural grassland

Article Abstract:

Research conducted on grassland ecology indicates that plant species recruitment is not influenced by moss cover, but is negatively correlated with ramet density. Species-rich seed mixtures were found to generate higher recruitment. Data were obtained from studies of Primula veris, Centaurea jacea, and Anthyllis vulneraria.

Galling insect diversity patterns: the resource synchronisation hypothesis

Article Abstract:

The author suggests that gall-making insects are drawn to synchronous leaf flushing, and that this plant trait may be a key factor in insect species richness in a given habitat.
