Modelling density-dependent fish shoal distributions in the laboratory and field

Article Abstract:

An individual-based model that was first used as a null model of shoal formation in fish with no shoaling tendency over the same range of densities used in the laboratory, is further developed. The predictive power of laboratory studies for the field is discussed with regards to using individual-based modelling as a tool for deriving such predictions.

Kin structure and shoal composition dynamics in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata

Article Abstract:

Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) possess many behavioral and life-history traits that promote kin structure and so about 272 sampled fish were genotyped from a pool of seven hypervariable microsatellite loci. Relatedness levels within each shoal did not differ significantly from zero indicating that kin selection does not contribute to gross structure.

Mechanisms underlying shoal composition in the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata

Article Abstract:

The mechanisms underlying the phenotypic composition of shoals of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) in a high-predation stream in Trinidad's Northern Mountain Range are investigated. Habitat segregation on a medium spatial scale and by fission/fusion processes on a small spatial scale assists in the determination of shoal composition.
