Nitrate removal from drinking water - review

Article Abstract:

The paper on the purification of water from nitrate by Anoop Kapoor and T. Viraraghavan was informative but lacked a detailed explanation of the treatment process known as BIOCRISTAL. The industrial utilization of BIOCRISTAL, a technology based on the membrane reactor process in operation in Douchy, France in Mar 1995 particularly needed additional input. However, an extensive illustration of the process is available in the May 1996 issue of the 'Journal of the American Water Works Association.'

U.S. drinking-water regulations: treatment technologies and cost

Article Abstract:

A study presented an outstanding overview of drinking-water regulations, the treatment technologies designed to comply with the regulations, and the cost of compliance. Currently, biological processes are widely used for removing biodegradable organics, synthetic organic compounds, ammonia, nitrate, iron and manganese from drinking water. Biological filtration in highly oligotrophic conditions can remove proteins, phenol, chlorinated phenols and chlorinated benzenes.

Low-cost polymeric aluminum coagulant

Article Abstract:

The use of polyaluminum hydroxy sulfate (PAHS) and alum and their impact on residual aluminum and turbidity removal at low temperatures in field investigations have been studied. The results showed that PAHS produced residual aluminum concentrations in water of less than 100 ppb. Moreover, PAHS 'cost-effectiveness and efficiency at low temperatures would enable water processed by it to meet Ontario's guidelines for drinking water.
