Perceived and measured levels of environmental pollution: Interdisciplinary research in the subarctic lowlands of northeast European Russia

Article Abstract:

The perception of environmental problems caused by extensive coal mining in the Usa Basin in northeast European Russia by local inhabitants was compared with political and remote sensing signatures of environmental pollution and their local impacts. The observations suggested that local people depended on direct observation to evaluate air pollution and that very little scientific knowledge was used in the shaping of these perceptions.

We are evaporating our coal mines into the air

Article Abstract:

The nine-word sentence 'we are evaporating our coal mines into the air', often used to introduce or illustrate discussions of the anthropogenic production of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels in the context of its effect on the Earth's climate is credited to Svante Arrhenius. It is argued that he was not the original author of the sentence and it was the work of four separate individuals.
