Recognizing local people's priorities for tropical forest biodiversity

Article Abstract:

The value of understanding what is important as a foundation for dialogue between scientists, policy-makers and forest communities is presented. It is suggested that integrate biodiversity inventories with information on how people view and value their natural environment can help improve forest conservation planning, address the needs of local people, and advance the management of tropical forestlands.

Combating land degradation through participatory means: the case of Swaziland

Article Abstract:

A community grazing protect to rehabilitate degraded land in Swaziland is examined. It is concluded that for participatory natural resource management to be more meaningful to communities, the projects should focus on local ecological priorities, instead of addressing the environmental concerns that are rooted within existing dominant power structures.
