Article Abstract:

The postwar industrialization of Japan and its rigid heirarchial conformity has produced a culture unwilling to change its views on environmental issues. Technology may be the immediate reason for Japan's wasteful industries, but it may also hold the solution to mend its ecological mistakes.

The publication of Rachel Carson's book 'Silent Spring' marked the beginning of the populist ecological movement, and it also marked the beginning of efforts by corporations to portray themselves as environmentally-conscious entities while in fact pursuing anti-environmental strategies.
