Richness, structure and functioning in metazoan parasite communities

Article Abstract:

A study aims to quantify general relationships between diversity, community structure and ecosystem functions in metazoan parasite communities for which data on parasite communities from 15 species of marine fish hosts from coastal Chile is used. After correcting for fish size, 47% of host species showed no relationship, 13% show a hump shaped curve and 40% show positive monotonic relationships between productivity and parasite richness across all host individuals in a sample.

Host specificity and geographic range in Haematophagous ectoparasites

Article Abstract:

The relationship between host specificity and geographic range size among flea species parasitic on small mammals, using data from seven distinct geographical regions, is investigated. Of the two measures of host specificity used, the number of host species used by a flea species, and a measure of the average taxonomic distance between the host species used by a flea, the latter index provides an evolutionary perspective on host specificity.

Taxonomic partitioning shedding light on the diversification of parasite communities

Article Abstract:

The relative importance of different processes in the diversification of parasite assemblages is described. There exists a higher rate of within-host parasite speciation in mammals than in other vertebrates.
