Role of sea-ice biota in nutrient and organic material cycles in the Northern Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

A study to analyze the role of the sea-ice biota on the nutrient and organic material cycles of the Northern Baltic Sea is conducted. The results reveal that the sea-ice bacterial communities have extremely high capacity of processing matter only during winters and its growth is highly controlled by the production of labile dissolved organic matter by algae.

Denitrification in the river estuaries of the Northern Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

A study to measure the denitrification rates in six different estuaries of the Northern Baltic Sea is conducted. The results demonstrate that the nitrogen load on the Baltic Sea cannot be satisfactorily reduced by the sediments of the fast-flowing rivers and the estuary areas with short residence times.

Eutrophication and self-purification: counteractions forced by large-scale cycles and hydrodynamic processes

Article Abstract:

The article examines eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. Sediment phosphorus levels are increasing, spreading anoxia over large regions. Saltwater inflows, which used to aid in denitrification, are now no longer adequate.
