Size and temperature dependent foraging capacities and metabolism: Consequences for winter starvation mortality in fish

Article Abstract:

The size-dependent foraging rates and critical resource density (CRD) in small Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) are estimated under winter conditions. The negative size-dependent winter mortality from starvation is indicated to be more pronounced in species that are not adapted to feed at low temperatures and in species feeding on zooplankton, since zooplankton abundance, in contrast to macroinvertebrate abundance, is generally low during winter.

Trophic dynamics in a whole lake experiment: size-structured interactions and recruitment variation

Article Abstract:

The recruitment variation, size-dependent interactions and trophic dynamics in whole lake experiment are discussed. The effects of introducing roach on phytoplankton are examined and it was found that roach could affect the phytoplankton dynamics in the treatment lakes in three ways.

Size-dependent resource limitation and foraging-predation risk trade-offs: growth and habitat use in young arctic char

Article Abstract:

The field data on the growth and habitat use of young-of-the-year (YOY) arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from three small mountain lakes is discussed. The extent of resource limitation of young-of-the-year (YOY) and 1-year old char is examined.
