Spatial relationships between site hydrology and the occurrence of grassland of conservation importance: a risk assessment with GIS

Article Abstract:

A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to determine the effect of the UK's Environmentally Sensitive Area scheme on Southlake Moor in Somerset, south-west England, which has been the recipient of raised water-level prescriptions since 1992. The prescriptions are meant to address the growing threat to Cynosurus cristatus-Caltha palustris grassland of late spring flooding in the area. Through the GIS, a database of plant water-regime requirements has been generated which, in turn, could quantify the water regime needs for individual grassland species on Southlake Moor.

Spatial economic variation: benefits transfer using geographical information systems

Article Abstract:

Benefits transfer was used for the economic valuation of the Rio Bravo Conservation Area in north western Belize. Geographical Information Systems are employed to shift the economic values of alternative environmental conservation sites to area being valued. The resulting economic value maps reveal benefit estimates of the area's natural capital assets. The results show that a spatial dimension to resource accounting arises when benefits transfer is applied.
