The Abisko Scientific Research Station: future environments and horizons

Article Abstract:

The Abisko Scientific Research Station, located in northern Sweden, is providing needed data on changes in the natural environment. Research subjects include meteorology, geomorphology and ecology. The data is used to assess environmental and biotic trends and to determine underlying causes of those trends. It will also be used to address issues such as pollution, biodiversity and land-use.

The Kiruna-Narvik Road and its impact on the environment and on recreational land use

Article Abstract:

The construction of Sweden's Kiruna-Narvik Road had significant environmental effects. Impacts were measured for air pollution, water and vegetation changes and wear. Although immediate negative impacts tapered off after the road was completed, secondary effects such as new construction and land-use changes were generated by increased human activities produced by opening the road.

Glacier mass balance and ice-core records from northern Sweden

Article Abstract:

Ice coring provides detailed data on past and present climatic changes when used in combination with glacier mass balance measurements. A core sample record dating from 1600-1900 revealed differences between glaciers on Sweden's east and west sides. While eastern glacier sizes are controlled by historically consistent summer temperatures, western glaciers are increasing in mass.
