The institutional design of forest certification standards initiatives and its influence on the role of science: the case of forest genetic resources

Article Abstract:

Two related questions about the non-governmental certification initiatives that promoted the sustainable management of resources in sectors such as fisheries and forestry are discussed. With a view to analyze the role of science in the development of certification standards, two dimensions of science are used to rationalize cautious and rigid versus flexible and discretionary standards for the management of forest genetic resources.
