C&D recycling: recovering materials via deconstruction

Article Abstract:

The business of house remodelling generates a lot of waste materials such as lumber and doors. Kurt Petrauskas, owner of Seattle, WA-based remodeling firm Earthwise Inc, decided to recycle these waste materials. He applied a reverse construction strategy to his remodeling projects. He carefully removed roof, walls and flooring to salvage as much of the materials to be discarded as possible. Later on, to generate more recyclable materials, he entered bids for houses scheduled for demolition.

Diverting commercial building materials

Article Abstract:

The Loading Dock in Baltimore, MD, is a nonprofit agency which accepts surplus residential construction materials and provides them to community groups as quality, inexpensive building materials. In return, donors get tax deductions in lieu of a receipt from a disposal company. The Loading Dock has been very successful that at the end of 1985, over 2,000 tons of materials have been saved from landfills while low income families were able to obtain affordable building materials.
