Certified organic farm relies on compost

Article Abstract:

Fresh Aire Farms, situated 50 miles northwest of Dayton, OH, processes between 2,000 cubic yards a year and 3,000 cubic yards a year of feedstocks. The feedstocks include horse manure, poultry litter and cattle manure. Windrows are created on a 1.5 acre graded site, with piles being turned with a tractor-pulled compost turner with capacity of 1,200 cubic yards an hour. Around 70% of the finished compost is applied to the farm's own land, but off-farm markets have been expanding, and 25% of total revenues now come from composting.
