Collecting recyclables in Metro Manila

Article Abstract:

The Metro Manila Women Balikatan Movement, a non-governmental organization, incorporated the advantages and discarded the shortcomings of the existing itinerant collection systems in Manila in their innovative program, Linis Ganda. The movement organized junk shops and households for the efficient collection of recyclables. The program provides a livelihood to 120 people while supplying raw materials to industries and artisans, and helps clean the San Juan River. Countries intending to start similar programs should modify existing patterns of materials recovery.

Alternative approaches to collecting recyclables

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the University of New Hampshire used 'efficiency factors' to compare curbside, drop-offs, and bag-based residential recycling, to find which system gave the lowest ratio between dollars per ton for collecting recyclables and percent of the residential social waste (RSW) stream diverted. Case studies on projects in Concord, Durham, and New Hampshire revealed that the curbside sort program in Durham diverted the most materials but at a much higher cost.
