Community pressure and clean technology in the informal sector: an econometric analysis of the adoption of propane by traditional Mexican brickmakers

Article Abstract:

An econometric analysis was undertaken on the adoption of 'clean air technology' by Mexican brick makers. The study showed that environment-friendly technology adoption by the informal manufacturing sector can be effected even if the initial cost of adoption is high. This was done by increasing the incentives for firms adopting the technology, by providing the training and equipment at low costs, and increasing the penalties for non-adopting firms, in the form of stringent regulations. A significant outcome of the study showed the effect of community pressure on compliance, where the environmental-friendly firms were supported by consumers and workers.

Environmental standards and industrial policy

Article Abstract:

A research effort explores a regulatory scenario in which a government can commit itself to the adoption of stricter environmental requirements without being able to set a specific date for regulatory changes. A path should be developed toward the stricter environmental standards that do not make domestic business enterprises competitively disadvantaged. Results show how a government can influence domestic companies to develop a technology that can cope with the stringent requirements by threatening an immediate tightening of environmental requirements.
