Coordinated approach: state greening team targets organics diversion

Article Abstract:

The California Integrated Waste Management Board has launched a project which aims to fulfill the requirement of a state statute to divert 50% of total organic waste by the year 2000. This translates to an annual addition of 7 million tons of organic waste to the 1996-1997 rate of 7.1 million tons. To achieve this, the board will hire additional full-time personnel and integrate related units within the department. It will also formulate rules to safeguard public health and the environment, as well as raise the quality of its compost.

Collection opportunity: capturing commercial organics in Des Moines

Article Abstract:

The state of Iowa has launched an experimental project to test the environmental and cost feasibility of large-scale composting. The state was able to interest more than 400 participants in the project from the agricultural industry as well as the food service industry. These participants had already practiced source separation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes on their own. Initial investments on the collection of the organic waste is expected to be offset by sales of the compost.
