Entrepreneurs surf the waste stream

Article Abstract:

Recyclable materials perceived to have little market value, such as mixed broken glass, paper mill sludge and low-grade plastics, can be diverted from the waste material pile-up. Broken glass can be recycled to form a rigid cellular foam glass insulation and building material. Paper mill sludge is preprocessed prior to being granulated, pelletized and packaged, and used for producing industrial absorbents. Low-grade plastics may be processed to create plastic lumber. This may be used in marine construction and outdoor decking although it is more expensive than real wood.
