Food service composting projects on the rise

Article Abstract:

The first survey of composting projects treating organics from food service and grocery sectors conducted in 1995 reveals an impressive level of growth. Both institutional and commercial food service entities are now able to include soiled paper waste along with their food scraps for composting, making it easier for them to participate. It is vital for communities that wish to increase their recycling and composting programs to work with local businesses to ensure it is economically feasible for all concerned.

From disposal to recovery: what's what with waxed corrugated

Article Abstract:

Waxed corrugated boxes, unlike their unwaxed counterparts, cannot be incorporated into recycled paper processes as their wax coatings are not soluble in water. These boxes are used for transporting fresh farm produce that need the moisture-retaining properties of wax. They also make good protective packaging for furnitures as the wax prevents scratches on their finishing. As an alternative to recycling, these boxes are composted together with food waste. They are also used as fuel for factory boilers.
