Hauler, composter partnership succeeds in diverting food residuals

Article Abstract:

A trucking company and composting plant in New Jersey have teamed up to divert approximately 16,000 tons per year of organic residuals away from landfills. The facility, Woodhue Ltd., and MacNeil Trucking Inc. obtain accounts from regional supermarkets, with the wastes collected by MacNeil and trucked to Woodhue.

Assessing food residuals recycling potential in New Jersey

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on using food residuals in New Jersey's animal feeding and composting industries. The animal feeding niche may require additional protections such as cooking and pelletizing to avoid swine and human health problems, while composting is decreasing through marketplace attrition.

National trends in food residuals composting

Article Abstract:

A national survey of programs promoting composting of food residual was conducted. The study revealed that there are 220 projects in operation nationwide. Currently, 204 are in progress while 16 are still under development in 36 states. One hundred and twenty-five facilities have been found using the windrow method, 24 employ an in-vessel system, 23 are aerated in static piles while 10 are into vermicomposting.
