Home composting makes major impact

Article Abstract:

The home composting program of the Massachusetts Dept of Environmental Protection (DEP) encouraged 205 of its 351 municipalities to participate. The initiative which began in 1991 was aimed at reducing solid waste, consisting of residential organics such as yard trimmings, nonrecyclable but compostable paper products and food scraps. To promote the program, the DEP used all outreach mediums available, including distribution of compost bins. It effectiveness was monitored through telephone surveys and survey forms.
