Landfill gives birth to ecoindustrial complex

Article Abstract:

Rutgers University's EcoComplex at New Jersey Resource Recovery Center is home to several incubator firms that can grow fish inside a greenhouse heated by landfill gas, produce ethanol from local crops, make compost tea and water filtration systems. The greenhouse facility, designed by the Biosource Engineering Department of Cook College, Rutgers University, showcases numerous environmental technologies in 'real world' conditions for economic development.

Using vermicompost in a Pennsylvania greenhouse

Article Abstract:

A Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE) grant was awarded Quiet Creek Farm to study the effect of vermicompost and dairy manure compost on herbs and vegetables grown in a high tunnel under organic conditions. The results indicate that vermicompost statistically increased the total yield and even after several frosts, plants treated with vermicompost were not as wilted.
