Lowering costs for yard waste composting

Article Abstract:

A number of Ohio municipalities are engaging the services of custom operators in composting yard waste. Shaker Heights, a Cleveland suburb, has contracted Greater Cleveland Ecological Association and Midwest Compost of Clyde, OH to manage composting operations for leaves and grass clippings. Renting the windrow turner from Midwest is an economically better option considering the amount of the suburb's grass clippings. Other advantages of custom service include economic efficiency when the net cost of composting is less than the net cost of purchasing the equipment, lower labor bill for the community and no maintenance responsibility.

The materials recovery facility in Huron County, OH, uniquely caters to the needs of a distinctively rural population. The plans for the building started in 1989 and after six months the facility started its processing operations. The business is committed to producing quality products by thorough separation of commingled recyclables. What makes this materials recovery facility different is that it also operates a monthly reuse market which promotes public awareness of the recycling industry among community members.

Extracting recyclables from the waste stream

Article Abstract:

A private firm, Norton Construction, has designed and constructed the Medina County (Ohio) Central Processing Facility (CPF) to recycle waste, and will operate it for 3 years. Norton markets recyclables and must dispose of materials it can't recycle, so the pressure to recycle always exists. The county charges a tipping fee of $54 a ton to haulers who charge residents accordingly. A portion of the tipping fee goes to repayment of debts incurred in starting and maintaining the composting facility on site.
