MSW composting at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

Municipal solid waste (MSW) composting was the most widely used approach for refuse disposal in 1995, with 27 MSW composting projects in operation nationwide. Sevierville, TN-based Bedminster Bioconversion Inc. is overseeing many of the projects in development including the 300-ton-a-day mixed waste plant that is scheduled to operate in Cobb County, GA, in early 1996. The program will be integrated with Cobb County's curbside recycling program to maximize materials diversion. In other projects, the company will not need to set up a curbside recycling program since recyclables will be separated at the mixed waste plant.

Evolution of a recycling system

Article Abstract:

Kalamazoo County, MI's recycling program is a testament to private sector involvement. Originally, nonprofit groups operated two dropoff sites, which then served 230,000 people. Afterwards, a pilot project was initiated by Michigan Disposal Services, which was supported by the county in terms of design and administration. Gradually, the success of the initial programs gave haulers and public officials the confidence to stand on their own, to the point where government support was no longer needed. The latest programs are being run by private entities.
