Market demand for yard trimmings

Article Abstract:

A two and a half year demonstration project in San Jose, California, has helped in increasing the supply of yard trimming products in the market. The sale and prices of the yard trimming products has increased. This indicates an increase in the agricultural use of compost in San Jose and surrounding areas. The processing and distribution companies have expanded their composting capacity. The diversion of non-composted material to large end users has decreased direct incorporation and mulching of perennial and orchard crops.

Compost replaces soil amendments at country club

Article Abstract:

The Villages Golf and Country Club, San Jose, California, uses compost as an alternative to soil amendments. The organic material for composting is collected by landscape maintenance trucks and then separated manually. An in-house research program has developed methods for composting grass clippings with minimum odor production. The degree of decomposition is indicated by the temperature, odor strength and oxygen. Moisture content, composition of materials and pile size are the variables under investigation.
