The financial crisis that hit Asia in 1997, which permeated until 1998 has negatively affected the North American recycling industry because this economic event has significantly reduced Asian countries' demand for ferrous scrap and steel products. Market conditions in the region, however, started to turn up in the 2nd half of 1999, which is expected to boost the recovery of North American recycling companies.
