Scrap tire homes keep rolling along

Article Abstract:

Taos, New Mexico-based Solar Survival Architecture continues to create new designs for homes that use recovered materials instead of traditional building materials. The company has a database of 300 Earthships, many of which were constructed from 1990-1994. The basic structural unit of these homes are recovered rubber tires, which are packed with 300 lbs. of earth to become building blocks. Aluminum cans are used to build the interior walls, while scraps of glass and wood are used as decorations.

Pushing the scrap tire envelope

Article Abstract:

Statistics from the Scrap Tire Management Council showed that some 12 million scrap tires were used in civil engineering applications in 1995. This pales in comparison to the 130 million tires used for fuel purposes during the year. The increasing use of scrap tires for civil engineering applications can be attributed to the efforts of engineers such as the University of Maine's Dana Humphrey to look for new end uses for scrap tires.

Puncturing the scrap tire problem

Article Abstract:

Scrap tire recovery is progressing significantly in the 1990s, and the Scrap Tire Management Council predicts that, by 2000, there will be a market for all of the tires discarded in the US each year. Tire-derived fuel accounts for most of the increase in scrap tire use, but some companies are are developing products based on ground tires. R-B Rubber Products Inc, for example, makes rubber mats from scrap tires.
