Compost - right stuff to manufacture topsoil

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common in the US for topsoil to be produced using byproducts such as compost and sands as virgin material is now becoming very hard to obtain. Compost manufactured topsoil can be produced to meet requirements for compaction resistance, maximum plant growth and infiltration rate. The organic component gives nutrient retention and supplies an environment in which microbial populations can exist. The mineral content allows water infiltration and resists compaction. Manufactured topsoil offers a very extensive marketplace for compost.

State transportation departments expand compost use

Article Abstract:

A study involving 19 state transportation agencies was conducted to survey compost utilization on roadsides, which are either experimental or routine in nature. Survey results showed that 19 state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are actually using compost while 34 DOTs are employing compost for routine and experimental purposes. Compost was used either as mulch, constituent of manufactured topsoil, material for erosion control and mitigation of wetlands. Compost was further used on filtration berms, in hydroseeding and biomediation.
