Smart states

Article Abstract:

Hawaii is now included among states developing seriously taken marketing strategy for recycled products. One reason for this move is the absence of demand for such products and the presence of surplus in the industry. The effort has proven rewarding for assertive states which have found big clients for their products. Translated economically, this would mean income for the state in taxes, economic development activities and employment for the people. Not only large corporations are targetted as end-users but also cottage industries and the government. The bureaucracy can do a lot to ensure the success of recycled waste products in the market.

The not so original disassembly industry

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers are exploring various ways of designing their products for recyclability. In fact, Bayerische Motoren Werke, Volkswagen and Audi have successfully designed cars for disassembly after these have outlived their usefulness. Other car manufacturers are trying to follow such initiative. General Electric is attempting to create a refrigerator that can be recycled. The popularity of recyclable products in the market is a prime motivating factor for producers to design for recyclability and disassembly.Financial incentives coupled with environmental benefits will contribute to the growth of the disassembly industry.

Markets, markets, markets

Article Abstract:

Recycling wastes is an increasing activity in the United States with the recovery figures for 1992 showing 21%, up from only 17% in 1991. The increase and maintenance of recovery rates is dependent on the cultivation of markets within easy reach of the place of recycling. Industries using these recycled materials form a very important link in the chain of processing. State governments can reduce solid waste volume and give an impetus to the economy by assuming responsibility for the development of definite markets for recycled materials.
