Solid waste composting in Canada

Article Abstract:

A study conducted in 1993 by the Composting Council of Canada reveals a 100% increase in composting facilities in Canada during the previous two years. The report says that over 275,000 tons of organic material are composted annually, of which yard waste accounts for three million tons and food waste for one million tons. Composting is playing an active role in solid waste management. Of the 137 private and municipal facilities identified, 53 started operations since 1991 and 16 are in the process of completion. Home waste composting is becoming popular in certain regions, such as Toronto, Ottawa, Thunder Bay and Vancouver.

Managing food residuals through on-site composting

Article Abstract:

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) decided to establish an on-site composting facility at its office in Ottawa, Ontario, to handle its daily food residuals. The compositing unit costs $54,513 and installation costs about $7,492. NRCan decided to ask other institutions to surrender their food residuals for composting since its 120 lbs./day of residuals was not adequate to fill the composting unit, which has a total capacity of 750 lbs./day. Total net cost of the NRCan composting unit is about $133/ton of residuals.

Cooperative marketing helps rural recycling

Article Abstract:

Rural communities in Canada and the US are reaping the benefits of cooperative marketing through enhanced waste collection, processing rates and markets for recycled products. The gaining prominence of cooperative marketing is indicated in the growing number of such programs in rural areas in both nations, as revealed in a recent survey by the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Minnesota Project.
