Sorting C&D into wood products

Article Abstract:

Recycling plants are focussing their efforts on the wood fraction of construction and demolition (C&D) debris. The Environmental Resource Return Corp., New Hampshire, and Nortech Waste, California, are two projects dealing with woody products and compost. Demolition contractors are asked to remove painted wood from the loads and large loads of treated lumber are excluded. Large metal objects and potentially hazardous materials are removed manually. Composting wood chips is a better use for this perceived waste material.

The state of garbage in America

Article Abstract:

Municipal solid waste recycling and composting programs are increasingly diverting large quantities of materials and receiving state grants, despite program funding cuts. Grants of $244.6 million were given to 39 states in 1995. Although recycling services have been initiated in rural areas as well as urban areas, about 38 states are yet to achieve their recycling goals. Municipalities may be asked to pay for the maintenance and improvement of the recycling programs in the near future.
