Water quality impacts of long-term effluent disposal strategies in Southeast Florida

Article Abstract:

The Southeast Florida Ocean Outfall Experiment II (SEFLOE II), conducted from 1991 to 1994, was able to determine the environmental acceptability of the open outfall discharge coming from four sources in Southeast Florida. SEFLOE II, which investigated open outfall discharges located in Broward County, Hollywood, Miami-North and Miami- Central, all in Southeast Florida, also determined that the treated effluents do not contribute to the degradation of the ocean environment in the immediate vicinity.

Biofouling in raw water supply wells and its impact

Article Abstract:

Along the Florida coast salt water is encroaching upon freshwater sources, and a high organic content also threatens water quality of aquifers. Nanofiltration, or membrane filtration, has worked better than the lime softening process. Frequent testing of bacteria is recommended for aquifer water.

Bifouling in raw water supply wells and its impact

Article Abstract:

Increasing populations have forced many coastal water utilities to seek new supplies in order to meet demand, particularly in Florida. Many of these secondary sources are contaminated, and several utilities have implemented membranous water softening processes to increase available supply.
