Return to Pinatubo

Article Abstract:

The Aetas of the Philippines are moving back to their villages around Mount Pinatubo from their resettlements in the lowlands. The life and customs of the lowlands are alien to these people with their simple lifestyles and social structure. The government's attempts to assimilate them in foreign-aided camps, after the volcanic eruption of Jun 9, 1991, may not work because of the cultural disparity. The Aetas are willing to risk the dangers of flowing debris during the rains for the cause of rebuilding their communities.
