In pursuit of an American image: a history of the Italian Renaissance for Harvard architecture students at the turn of the twentieth century

Article Abstract:

The remarks of the Boston architect Herbert Langford Warren about the life in Europe are presented. The views expressed by Warren were very closer to those led by Boston architects and historians, and it provides divergent attitudes toward the architecture of the Italian Renaissance.

Enfreaking war-injured bodies: fallen soldiers in propaganda and American literature of the 1920s

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on the portrayal of disabled veterans after World War I, along with their social marginalization. The article focuses on the schism between the physical strength idealized by the US Army and the disability it visits on its members through combat.

Minstrel-soldiers: the construction of African-American identity in the Union Army

Article Abstract:

Approximately 180,000 black men served in the Union Army and were crucial to Northern victory. Most blacks viewed military service as a means to social equality, and army culture began to regard the minstrel-soldier as an embodiment of national and military values.
