India at 50: democracy, nationalism and foreign policy choices

Article Abstract:

India's experiment with democracy since it gained its independence in 1948 has had mixed results. There has been opposition from regions, communities and groups, but it has been possible to prevent dissent reaching explosive levels. There has been economic and political progress, although more than 25% of the population continues to live below the poverty line. In the future, it is likely that consensus about economic issues will determine the nature of government. It is possible that India will see the emergence of coalitional politics.
