The scarlet letter of the law: Hawthorne and criminal justice

Article Abstract:

'The Scarlet Letter's' narrative specificity, boundedness, closure and interpretive ambiguities made it an ideal contribution to the American cultural dialogue on law and obedience. In the same month that this novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne appeared, the Compromise Act of 1950, whose provisions include the Fugitive Slave Law, was being promoted as a means to preserve the nation. However, in exploring the relation of crime and law to the private individual, Hawthorne was more interested in the sufferings of whites, not blacks.
