Photorealist nostalgia and the American family

Article Abstract:

Robert Bechtle's photorealist paintings evoke a nostalgic image of the 1950s and this subtly critiques the current 1970s. The photorealist mode has been dismissed for its nostalgia. However, nostalgia can be seen as stemming from current problems. Bechtle expresses his anxiety about the nuclear family in his work. The set of three, 'Foster Freeze, Alameda,'Foster Freeze, Escalon' and 'Agua Caliente Nova' are discussed.

Norman Rockwell and American mass culture: the crisis of representation in the Great Depression

Article Abstract:

Norman Rockwell faced professional insecurities coinciding with the Great Depression. He experimented with changes in technique but none of them significantly affected his original artistic vision. His chose to continue his old approach and this limited him to the role of illustrator rather than allowing him to grow as an artist. He reverted to nostalgia and moved away from regionalism and authenticity.

The aesthetics of presence: the landscape paintings of Peter Holbrook

Article Abstract:

American photorealist painter Peter Holbrook's landscape paintings are critiqued. An exponent of photorealism in the late 1960s, Holbrook's landscape pictures reveal dynamism, an intricate interplay of shadow and light. His works are complex in composition, monumental in character and sophisticated in technique, making them indisputable representatives of late 20th century images of nature.
