To "personalize the rainpipe": the critical mythology of Edward Hopper

Article Abstract:

The critical reception of Edward Hopper's paintings during the 1930s depended more on the politics of the critic than on any intrinsic meaning of the work. Hopper's art appealed to bourgeois liberal critics who favored his realism over the abstract modernism of European art and his nostalgic American Scene subject matter over the social realism of the left. These critics viewed Hopper's work as more masculine than European modern art; it also affirmed an American identity that was based exclusively on North European ethnicity.
