Children hear frightening stories about AIDS and sometimes develop misconceptions about the disease. Parents should explain how AIDS is and is not contracted and what behavior can lead to AIDS. Parents of teenagers should be frank and keep lines of communication open.

All dressed up and nowhere to go

A mother is concerned that emphasis on clothes will encourage her daughter to grow into a woman who does not feel worthwhile unless she is dressed fashionably. She believes that boys are not provided the message that their identity depends on the clothing they wear.

Infant development timetables cause a mother to worry and panic if her child's development strays from what the experts say is normal. A mother becomes so frustrated by these timetables that she vows to blow up all of her child development books.
